Pyopneumothorax (PYO) is caused by a simultaneous accumulation of pus (pyo) and air or gas (pneumo) within the pleural space, which is the narrow protective area between the lungs and the chest wall.
This rare, severe respiratory condition typically arises when an existing bacterial infection or lung injury breaches the barrier between your airways and the pleural lining.
